Never, ever, never, nooooooo never, go to a wedding in a white dress!!!
White = bride!! NO CAN DO! NEVER!

And some more information :

Black tie=floor length gowns, but most people will do fine with knee-length! Times are changing :)
Back in the days, black and red where not done, but nowadays, you can go in black or red.
The next outfit is casual and you can wear it for many other events !
Men should wear a tuxedo, combined with a bow-tie!

White tie= ball-room gowns for the ladies, men can get away with a suit with a white shirt, but keep in mind that you must wear a waste-coat (and a white tie) ! 

 

Casual= men can wear pants and a jacket , no can do on weddings = jeans!!! Never go to a wedding in jeans, it's like going to church dressed like a whore! Women can go for a dress, trousers or skirt and nice top.

Lounge = men can wear a suit with a nice shirt (no need for it to be white)! Ladies go for a nice dress! 

Cocktail = the same as lounge for the men, but women need to dress up in a cocktaildress!
